Tree Planting
Considerations when planting a new tree
There are lots of things to consider when planning to plant a new tree in your garden or grounds. We are happy to discuss your specific requirements, taking into account:
- foliage
- blossom
- fruit
- attractive bark
- autumn colour
- size
- shade
- evergreen or deciduous
We will always evaluate the site before making a recommendation and once agreed, can supply and plant suitable trees.
Tree Pruning
There are different ways you can prune a tree
Firstly, it is a myth that trees benefit from pruning as each pruning cut represents a wound. The analogy of giving a tree a haircut cannot be used: whilst hair is dead, branches are very much alive. Therefore, the type and extent of pruning should be carefully considered before any tree works are undertaken. Below is a list of terms and what they achieve:
Crown lifting
Removal of low branches back to the main trunk or parts of branches to allow access, views or daylight beneath the tree's crown.
Crown thinning
Selective removal of branches or parts of branches, evenly throughout the crown, by a maximum of up to 33%.
Crown reduction
Shortening of branches to a suitable growth point to reduce both height and spread of the tree's crown by up to 33%.
Involves removal of dead, diseased, broken and/or rubbing branches within the crown.
Removal of dead branches without cutting into living wood or bark.
Tree Felling
Tree felling involves dismantling the tree in small sections
The felling of a tree is always the last resort, after every other possible course of action has been exhausted.
In an urban environment the felling of a tree usually involves dismantling the tree in small sections using ropes and pulleys to carefully lower branches and timber to the ground, so as not to cause damage or destruction to the surrounding plants or structures. If it is necessary to remove debris through a house, we will ensure that walls and floors are protected before work commences.
Stump Removal
We remove stumps using modern, efficient machinery
Our stump grinder will remove any tree stump in most locations. The machine has a cutting wheel fitted with tungsten carbide teeth which revolve at high speed to cut the stump, roots and adjacent soil into small particles. The by-product from stump grinding is a mixture of soil, wood and small stone which we usually use to level the ground around where the stump was located. Any excess debris is then removed from the area. Where access to the stump is restricted, we can poison it to prevent re-growth and allow the stump to slowly decay.

Tree Pruning
Crown lifting
Removal of low branches back to the main trunk or parts of branches to allow access, views or daylight beneath the tree's crown. Please note that the removal of many low branches from around the trunk my lead to a column of decay forming within the tree.
Crown thinning
Selective removal of branches or parts of branches, evenly throughout the crown, by a maximum of up to 33%. This allows more light to filter through the tree and may reduce it's wind resistance. This treatment does not markedly alter the tree's shape, crown size or appearance.
Crown reduction
Shortening of branches to a suitable growth point (i.e. branchlet) to reduce both the height and spread of the tree's crown by a maximum of up to 33%. This treatment allows more light to pass over and around the tree.
The Forestry Authority Research Division advise that Crown Reduction may cause branches to die back in many trees, notably beech, birch, cherry, conifers and horse chestnut.
Crown cleaning
Involves the removal of dead, diseased, broken and/or rubbing branches within the crown. This pruning treatment is similar to Crown Thinning.
Dead wooding
Removal of dead branches. When removing these branches, cuts should not be made into living wood or bank as this may injure tree.
Tree Felling
In an urban environment the felling of a tree usually involves dismantling the tree in small sections using ropes and pulleys to carefully lower branches and timber to the ground, so as not to cause damage or destruction to the surrounding plants or structures. Tree Reports
Trees make a valuable contribution to the amenity of a site but can also represent a hazard if not inspected and managed. Tree owners are legally obliged to take reasonable steps to inspect trees and to carry out any remedial action that may be appropriate to prevent or minimise risk of personal injury or damage to property.

How much does tree surgery cost?
How quickly can the job be done?
When is the right time to prune a tree?
What's the difference between a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) and Conservation Area (CON)?
My tree has a preservation order on it; will you make the application on my behalf?
What happens if I use someone who is not insured?
Why do I need a maintenance programme?
In addition, a regular maintenance programme allows structural defects in a tree to be noticed and dealt with before branches (or trees!) fall down and cause damage or injury. Pests and diseases can also be dealt with before they become terminal for the tree. If necessary, trees can be taken down in a controlled manner to minimise danger and damage.
Which areas of London do your tree surgeons cover?
What's the difference between a tree surgeon and an arborist?
What are my rights regarding my neighbours’ tree if it is causing me a problem?
⦁ If the tree is dead and dangerous and you cannot contact the owner, you then need to contact your Local Authority’s tree department who will be able to advise you of the best course of action.
⦁ If the tree overhangs your property, it should be possible to cut it back to the boundary, sensitively, once you have permission from the owner of the tree and any relevant planning approval from the Local Authority.
⦁ If you decide to prune or cut down a tree that does not overhang your property, without approval from the owner of the tree, you could be liable for criminal damage.
